Original Articles

Should be up to 3,000 words in length, using double spacing and a wide margin (at least 2cm) on each side of the text.

Review Articles

Literature reviews on any area of research relevant to of the health care of children, infants and neonates, and young people are welcomed. Submissions should not exceed 5,000 words.

Research-in-Brief

In this section, preliminary results from studies or parts of studies can be published as an advance notice if the nature of the content warrants early dissemination, or the research would not normally be published. In the case of preliminary results, which may subsequently be published in NPCHN or elsewhere, it is expected that the publication will be refer to and fully reference the prior work in NPCHN.

Editorials

The editorial team may invite experts in a particular field to write an editorial. This will be up to 1500 word long, and will contain relevant and particular information related to the topic of interest. We welcome queries from authors who would like to write editorials on topics in which they have an interest.

Commentaries

We welcome commentaries on papers published in NPCHN. They should be approximately 1,000 words and provide a critical but constructive perspective on the published paper.

Response to Commentary

If a commentary is written, the original authors will be given the opportunity to respond and responses wil be published at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.

Book Reviews

These can be up to 1000 words in length and should contain a critical analysis of the book, with, where appropriate, implications of the book for practice, and recommendations by the reviewer.

Discussion and Opinion Papers

These can be position papers and critical reviews of works which do not contain empirical data or use systematic review methods. These should be structured as follows: Aims; Background; Method (stating that it is a position paper or critical review, for example); Conclusions, Relevance to clinical practice.

Student Corner

Students undertaking undergraduate courses, post-graduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas, honours degrees, or equivalent, are invited to submit short papers, 1500-2000 words (with abstract of 200 words). International submissions are welcome. Submissions may include those arising from student work, assignments and presentations. All papers are required to be original, and not submitted elsewhere. Submissions may include presentation of findings from research projects, including pilot studies, clinical papers, case studies, reports, review articles or letters.  As per the Guidelines for Authors, each submission undergoes peer review, and is evaluated on its timeliness, relevance, accuracy, clarity and applicability to the journal. Implications of the study findings, and recommendations for further work should be included.
